Solar Pool Heating - Frequently Asked Questions

Why Heat Your Pool with Solar?

Q  How much will it cost to heat my pool?
A  Because of the so many variables for every situation it is difficult to quote prices but for an estimate refer to our pricing page.

Q  How hot will my pool get?
A  It depends on how many heating panels you have and how long the sun shines.

Q  How much roof space do I need?
A  Ideally the same surface area as your pool

Q  What is the best orientation for my roof?
A  North, then North West and Finally North East in that order.

Q  Do I need a separate solar pump or can I use the existing pump?
A  A separate solar pump is not always used but for exceptionally long pipe runs or very large pools and two or three storey homes sometimes we use an extra pump

Q Do the panels have to fit on the roof?
A No we install panels on ground mounted racks as well.

Q  Can I combine my pool heating with my domestic hot water system?
A No they are two separate systems look at our page on solar hot water

Q  Why do some pool companies and builders recommend heating my pool by gas or a heat pump?
A These forms of heating are very quick and easy to install have good profit margins for very short installation times. Solar installations can take up to one to two days to install

Q  Why should I install solar rather than other heating types?
A  If you really only want to swim when the sun is shinning and the air temperature is warm then solar is by far the most cost effective. The sun is your power source. If you want to swim in the winter you will have to consider some other form of heating.

Q  What is the difference between ordinary solar strip and Heliocol panels?
A Solar strip is the older style heating that is glued to your roof or held on with multiple penetration of pins that can cause rusting leaks etc. Heliocol is far newer technology

Q  Should I buy strip or Heliocol panels?
A We sell both but always recommend Heliocol better all round

Q  Do I need a cover?
A  We recommend a thermal cover rather than a bubble cover to keep the heat in the pool rather than lose it overnight.
